Located in the temperate area, the island of Venice only partially receives the typical benefits of sea-areas because of the lagoon that surround the island. It protects the town but, on the other side, makes the climate extremely damp, especially when the scirocco , the hot wind coming from the south, starts to blow. This wind is also one of the factors that could cause the high water phenomenon, that push the water over the ground level.

Generally Venice only has high water in Autumn and Winter and even then it is not every day that the streets are flooded. However when a higher than usual tide is expected in the city, sirens blare to warn the population so that they can prepar themselves.
